Why do we need Government?
Behind every progressive policy is the moral value of empathy. We must all have empathy and take responsibility to act and care!
Ethics in government should be built around care. Care means that government should be there for the protection and empowerment of its citizens.
When we talk about freedom, opportunity, and security we are talking about values which are strengthened and protected by good government.
Security which is also protection, is more than just the army, police and fire department. It means social security, disease control and public health, food safety, disaster relief, health care, consumer and work protection and environmental protection. These values are important to us. Our government can help assure these are met through programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, the Affordable Care act and the EPA. The Consumer Protection agency provides for unemployment benefits and a fair minimum wage. FEMA aids communities when natural and climate change disasters occur. Government is important in making sure that we have civil rights and justice for all.
Empowerment is also a role of government. Empowerment increases our freedom and opportunities. Without empowerment we would be limited to what we could accomplish individually. Freedom to go anywhere you want because of safe highways and bridges, the ability to communicate through the internet and satellite communications, public education that opens up the world, the banking system so you can buy a house or get loans for a new business; the SEC which allows the stock market to function responsibly, the court system to enforce our laws. Everyone in this country uses this empowerment supplied by our government to run a successful business and to take care of your family.
Good government maximizes our freedom. It guarantees freedom from harm, from want, and from fear.
The Democratic Party strives to insure that all Americans are blessed with freedom, opportunity, and security with a progressive, life-affirming government.
