2018 J.P. Livaditis Memorial Scholarship Winner – Evy Ulery

Congratulations to Evy Ulery, winner of the 2018 J.P Livaditis Memorial Scholarship. Evy is pictured with Bette Holland, Chair of the Dawson County Democratic Party. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving Dawson County High School senior and is in memory of our friend and fellow Democrat, J.P. Livaditis. Evy will be attending Kennesaw State University in the fall. We wish her the best in all of her future endeavors.

Fallapalooza Candidate Rally and Fundraise in Dahlonega

The Dawson County Democrats were one of the major sponsors of a Candidate Rally and Fundraiser held in Dahlonega. Candidates present were Josh McCall for 9th District US Congress; Otha Thornton for State School Superintendent; Richard Keatley for State Labor Commissioner; John Barrow for Georgia Secretary of State and Dawn Randolph for District 5 Public Service Commission.
North Georgia Democrats were out in force and enjoyed great music, food and speeches by the candidates.

Stacy Abrams Democratic Nominee for Governor Spoke to Dawson Democrats at March 24 Meeting

Stacey Abrams, the winner of the May Primary for Democratic Candidate for Governor spoke at our March 24 meeting. She gave us a rundown of many of the issues important to all Georgians and her stance on these issues and also emphasized why it was critical that we elect a Democratic Governor in 2018.

March for Our Lives in Dahlonega

After our March 24 meeting, Stacey Abrams and a number of our members traveled to Dahlonega for a rally in support of the students of Parkland, FL

2017 Fall Party & Fundraiser at the Lake

A great time was had by all !! We had a great turnout and raised funds to help get Democrats elected in 2018. Our guest speaker was R.J. Hadley, candidate for Georgia Secretary of State.

2017 People’s Climate March – April 29 in Washington D.C.

On April 29 John and Barb Balducci, and Dale and Bette Holland joined 200,000 concerned fellow citizens in Washington D.C. for the 2017 Peoples Climate March. 

2017 Georgia Democratic Party State Dinner

A full house of Democrats from around the state attended the annual state party dinner on April 20th at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Atlanta. We had a good group of 9th district Democrats in attendance, including the Hollands and Balduccis from Dawson and Pickens counties. Speakers included: Dubose Porter, Chairman – Georgia Democratic Party; Tom Perez, Chairman – Democratic National Committee; John Ossoff, Democratic Candidate for 6th District Congressional seat; 

The keynote speaker was Maxine Waters , Congresswoman from the 43 district of California. It was a great night of “fired up” Democrats!!!!!

March 2017 Meeting at Big Canoe

We had a great turnout at our March meeting at Big Canoe. Our guest speaker was Mayor Ted Terry of Clarkston, GA. He spoke about Climate Change and how it effects people all over the world. He explained to us how droughts, floods, hot and freezing temperatures especially impact refugees around the world. Mayor Terry is not only the Mayor of Clarkston, but also VP, Democratic Party of Georgia in charge of Candidate Recruitment as well as Director of Sierra Club – Georgia.

March 6, 2017 Rally at Representative (R-GA 9) Doug Collin’s Office

Bette Holland Chair of Dawson County Democrats. Ken Akins, Chair of Lumpkin County and Marrisa Pyle, a Lumpkin County citizen that depends on the ACA for healthcare, met with Representative Doug Collins to discuss various issues important to all Americans. A group of 110 concerned 9th district constituents rallied outside his office. Representative Collins doesn’t think it’s important to hold live town hall meeting’s, opting instead for tele-meetings– So we brought the town hall meeting to him!

2017 Women’s March

An estimated 60-70,000 (It sure seemed like more) people gathered in Atlanta to make themselves heard. It was a great experience. Bette & Dale Holland, Evy Ulery, and Mike & Lynne Holliman had a great time.

Best turnout ever at our yearly Christmas Party. Over 40 people braved the cold and rain to celebrate our friendship with good food & drink, and stimulating conversation! What a terrific group!!!!

We had another great turnout at our annual end of the year party at the lake. We had a great time — cooking out, socializing and planning. We were especially happy to have the opportunity to talk with our special guest, Jim Barksdale, Democratic Party candidate for the U.S. Senate.

August 2016 Meeting at Big Canoe

We had a terrific turnout for our first meeting at Big Canoe. Three speakers were in attendance. Brenda Jordan who is running for State Senate District 24( Consists of Hart County south to Augusta) and representatives from Jim Barksdale for U.S. Senate and Michele Jones, candidate for State House 30 in Hall county. Bette Holland gave a presentation about the proposed state constitutional amendment– Amendment 1 (takeover over some public schools by the state)- that will be on the ballot in November and why everyone should vote NO.

People’s Climate March – Atlanta

Dale and Bette Holland, along with Tom McMillan and John Ackerman from Lumpkin County and John Locke from Hall County participated with 500 others in the People’s Climate March in Atlanta. These marches happened in cities all around the world in anticipation of the COP21 climate talks that began November 29th in Paris. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is attending these talks with a contingent of other Mayors from around the country.

Forum on Climate Change

Brad Rouse with “The Climate Reality Project” and “The Citizen’s Climate Lobby” made a presentation on the subject “Beyond Fossil Fuels”. He spoke about the effects of greenhouse gasses as it relates to climate change and the health of our population, how renewable energy is becoming more and more affordable, and how we can attain a cleaner, healthier environment by slowly cutting fossil fuels from our energy mix and switching to renewable energy. He informed the group about “Carbon Fee and Dividend” that the Citizen’s Climate Lobby is promoting. This is an alternative to a “Carbon Tax” and information can be found on their website.

Sierra Club Rally in Atlanta

On August 4th, four of our North Georgia Democrats took to the streets with like-minded folks and let the EPA know where they stood on new proposed Air and Water regulations. They attended a rally at Woodruff Park sponsored by the Sierra Club then marched to the CNN Center where EPA Hearings were being held.

Moral Monday at the Capitol in Atlanta

Dawson County Democrats participate in first Moral Monday. This was the first of the Moral Mondays. The purpose of the rally was to convince the governor to expand Medicaid coverage as outlined in the Affordable Care Act.

Climate Rally in Dahlonega, GA

Citizens from across north Georgia gathered on the square in Dahlonega, GA to voice their concerns about the changing climate, the XL Keystone pipeline and their support for renewable energy. The rally was organized by the Dawson and Lumpkin County Democrats.
